Here at Patch Wood Farm we breed the Old Fashioned or European type of Jack Russell Terrier.

There are two varieties of the Jack Russell Terrier. There is the Old Fashioned type Jack Russell Terrier which originates in Ireland (and England) and the Parson Russell Terrier. The old style Jack Russell is often referred to as English, Irish Jax, shortie, puddin, or miniature Jack Russell. They smaller and more stocky than the Parson Russell Terrier. They were originally bred to be barn companions and to keep the rodent populations down at horse farms all across Europe.

The European Jack Russell has a more docile nature and much less of a hunting drive than the Parson Russell Terrier. My dogs are bred for temperament and substance, not for hunting ability. They are a playful charming breed, but after a long walk are very content to curl up on the couch or in the bed. The Old Fashioned Jack Russell is often described as a study, intelligent, and a well mannered terrier.

Our Jack Russells are bred for temperament and health. They are raised in our home and get a great deal of individual attention. They are well socialized with children, cats, and other dogs from the moment they are born. We test each puppy's temperaments and they all come with a health and temperament guarantee.

All puppies have different personalities. We can help you choose the right puppy for your lifestyle with some basic information. It is a big commitment to purchase a puppy and we want you to make the right decision for you and your family. We are there for any and all questions you have about your puppy for his or her life.

We breed our dogs to meet the English Jack Russell Terrier Alliance  (click to be linked to standard) standard. Our Jack Russells are much shorter and slightly longer with more substance than the Parson or American Jack Russell Terrier.

What to look for in a reputable breeder?

Please be aware that there are a select number of reputable shortie Jack Russell Terrier breeders. There are many "breeders" that import unregistered, unhealthy puppies (sometime mutts) and sell them as Jack Russell Terriers from Ireland.

Before you purchase a puppy be sure to meet the parents of the litter and ask many questions of the breeders. If the puppies are imported, you should get multiple pictures of the parents and a pedigree or IKC registration papers. Also note that it is illegal to import puppies from Ireland before the age of 10 weeks.

Beware of Jack Russells that are not a base color of white.  There is no such thing as an all black or all brown Jack Russell Terrier!! Lastly, all puppies should always come with a (lifetime) health and temperament guarantee.
